What Is Folk Art Technology?

Handcrafted word oracles, sculptural blocks, and interactive folk-art technology by Will Carpenter.

The name brings together two ideas at the heart of the work. Folk Art reflects the handmade tradition and the influence of the Arts & Crafts movement — objects shaped by human hands, meant to be useful, beautiful, and enduring. Technology reaches back to something far older than electronics: letters, numbers, and written language were among humanity’s earliest technologies — tools created to preserve thought, communicate meaning, and shape the world.

Each piece is both a physical work of art and a working word oracle: a handcrafted object designed to be touched, rearranged, re-spoken, and re-seen over time. As words shift and new combinations emerge, the work becomes a living invitation to reflection, imagination, meaning, wonder, and joy.
